Sometimes we don’t know which stitch to use for our next project and we always wind up using the same one. The solution is to learn different stitches and today we are going to explain how to crochet waffle stitch. It’s a stitch that comes out very thick and very pretty. It’s perfect for a sweater as well as a scarf.

This stitch is easy. It is made with double crochet alternating two techniques that we will see in the videos in this post:

  • Double crochet through the front loop
  • Double crochet through the back loop

For this post I used a size 8 crochet hook and a skein of meriwool that you can find on our website. I love it for its softness and variety of colors. It’s amazing!

To start our project we have to make a foundation chain with a multiple of 4 chains. For this example the chain has 20 stitches.

Row 1: chain 3 which will count as one double crochet. Work one double crochet in the fifth chain from the hook, and continue working in double crochet across the whole row.

Row 2: chain 3 which will count as the first double crochet. Now, *work one double crochet through the front loop and 2 double crochet through the back loop*. Repeat from * to * until there is one stitch left and work one double crochet as usual.

Row 3: chain 3 which will count as the first stitch of the row. *Work 2 double crochet through the front loop and 1 double crochet through the back loop*. Repeat from * to * until there is one stitch left, and finish the row with a double crochet as usual.

After finishing the first 3 rows it should look like this. Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you finish the garment.

Try using waffle stitch for your next project and share it with us on social network using the hashtag #WeAreKnitters so we can enjoy seeing your creativity.
